What is Integrated Pest Management (IPM)?
IPM is a sustainable, science-based approach that combines monitoring, sanitation, exclusion, and targeted pesticide use. Home Guard IPM uses IPM to provide safe, long-term pest solutions that minimize environmental impact and reduce pesticide resistance. A key component of IPM is that pesticide use is only a piece of the total solution, we also focus on physical, mechanical, cultural, and biological controls that help reduce or eliminate pest pressures, only relying on chemical controls for immediate knock-down while we address longer-term conducive conditions.
What are signs of a pest infestation?
Signs include droppings, damaged food packaging, grease trails, foul odors, bug sightings in daylight, and scratching noises inside walls. If you notice any of these, contact Home Guard IPM for a professional inspection.
How much does pest control cost in New Albany?
Pricing varies based on the size of your home and the type of pest issue. General pest control typically ranges from $150 to $300 per service. Home Guard IPM offers competitive pricing for premium service, tailored specifically for your unique situation, and protected by our Guardian Guarantee.
What types of products do you apply during service?
We use liquid residual insecticides, granular baits, dusts, insect growth regulators, and mechanical traps, depending on your specific pest problem. All products are applied strategically to maximize effectiveness while maintaining safety and environmental responsibility.
Do I need pest control even if I don’t see bugs?
Maybe. Preventative treatments are a highly effective way to ensure that you will continue to not see bugs long into the future. However, not everyone needs professional pest control. It is very true that it costs much more to remove an infestation than to prevent one, but if you don’t see any bugs, and they are not bothering you, then you may not need professional service. It is still recommended to periodically have a professional inspect your home for unknown entry points, or hidden threats such as termites. If you aren’t sure if you need professional pest control, give Home Guard IPM a call today.
When is the best time to start pest control service?
Here in Central Ohio, pest pressure generally starts to increase in late March as the weather warms. You’ll start seeing ants swarm in early spring, but by summer, mosquitoes will be in full force too. By late-summer, stinging insects like yellowjackets start to become a real threat to your family. But even as temperatures start to drop, you’ll have more occasional invaders appearing like stink bugs and Asian lady beetles. And don’t forget rodents which can thrive year round, but become a real problem in fall and winter. The best time to start a pest management program is when you’re concerned that you may have a problem. Preventative treatments beginning before you have an infestation will save your peace of mind, and not to mention, money.
What conditions attract pests into a home?
Pests generally don’t want to be inside your home. They’re there because of an unintended welcome sign. This is almost always related in some way to moisture, food, or breeding sites. Spiders make their nests by the light on your porch because that same light is attracting its dinner. Springtails love a humid home. The ants go marching across your counter tops right up to those breadcrumbs left from your morning toast. At Home Guard IPM, we inspect not just the targeted pests you called us about, but your home as a whole and help put into place solutions to make your home less appealing to pests to keep them outside where they belong.
Does Home Guard IPM offer bed bug extermination?
Yes. We provide thorough bed bug control using the latest industry techniques. At Home Guard IPM, our technicians are trained to understand bed bug biology and behavior to maximize treatment effectiveness. Our treatments are designed to eliminate bed bugs in all life stages and prevent recurrence.
How do you control mice and rats in homes?
Rodent control starts with a full inspection to locate entry points and nesting areas. We’ll target these areas inside your home to remove any rodents that have made their way in. We then implement exclusion work to prevent rodents from re-entering your home. We may also use tamper-proof bait stations, and trapping methods to control the populations outside your home. Rodent control is an ongoing commitment, but with an initial investment into exclusion, long-term prevention is definitely achievable.
How do you get rid of cockroaches effectively?
Effective treatment of cockroaches requires highly specialized expertise. At Home Guard IPM, our Guardians are trained to identify the different species of cockroaches found in Central Ohio, and based on the species, have a detailed protocol to follow. This protocol will include recommendations for how to solve the conducive conditions, which is a necessary step for long-term success when addressing cockroach infestations. Our technicians also have access to industry leading treatments that minimize the amount of chemical controls needed within your home. Each situation is different, and your Guardian will walk you through your customized treatment plan.
Why do I still see bugs after treatment?
An increase in visible pest activity after treatment is very common immediately following a treatment. In some cases, we’ve baited for the target pests, and the increased activity is a great sign that they’re happily taking the bait back to their friends, and you should quickly see a drop-off of all pest activity as the baits delayed effects take hold. In other cases, like a treated yellow-jacket nest that could not be fully removed, you’ll see increased activity because the pests know something is wrong and are on high-alert. Following an effective treatment, you’ll see a significant drop-off of activity within a couple of days. For some stubborn cases, your Guardian may set the expectation early that we’ll need to come back to retreat, but in either case, you’re fully covered by our Guardian Guarantee, where we will come out for free and retreat the targeted pests if activity remains.
Are pest control treatments safe for children and pets?
Yes. A pest management professional will always apply any controls in a way which has been thoroughly researched and proven to be safe for you and your family, including your children and pets. At Home Guard IPM, we minimize the use of pesticides indoors, by targeting the conducive conditions outside of your home that led to the pests coming in to begin with. However, when an interior treatment is necessary, your Guardian will inform you of the safety guidelines, such as how long you will need to wait before allowing anyone to reenter treated spaces
Is professional pest control more effective than DIY products?
Yes, but secret time, its not because of the chemicals. Nearly all chemicals that your pest management professional (at Home Guard IPM or elsewhere) will use at your property will have the same active ingredients as those products you can buy online or even at the local big-box store. Pest management professionals aren’t more effective because we have better products. But our deep expertise in identifying pests, understanding their behavior, what brought them to your home in the first place, which control methods are most effective, and most importantly, how to apply those techniques in a safe and sustainable manner is what sets professional service apart from the DIY solution. Tired of fighting a recurring pest problem, call a Guardian today.
How frequently should pest control be performed?
Most homes in New Albany and surrounding areas in Central Ohio benefit from at least quarterly pest control service. This schedule ensures protection through every season, and is tailored to address specific pest pressures you’ll face throughout the year. For homes with active infestations, monthly visits may be recommended until the issue is under control. However, at Home Guard IPM, we take a longer-term approach, and will provide recommendations of how to reduce the need for any pesticides around your home, by addressing the conducive conditions that often lead to the need for a pest management professional. This is the Smarter, Safer, Stronger way of doing pest control!
What is the most effective way to eliminate ants in the home?
At Home Guard IPM, we provide targeted ant control solutions that address both the ants you see and the hidden colony. You only will ever see a tiny fraction of the entire colony, a fact our proven ant control solutions lean into. Ants are social creatures that forage for food, eating what they can, and taking the rest back to the colony for others. When ants do this with baits (like those you can buy at the hardware store), its this trophallaxis, or mouth-to-mouth feeding that spreads the pesticide to the queen, larvae, and other works — ultimately killing the whole colony. Unfortunately, the baits you’ll find at most local stores fall short when it comes to triggering this trophallaxis behavior in a way that kills the colony, and while they will definitely kill some ants, it can actually cause more problems in your home.
